| Graciosa Island belongs to the central group of the Azores archipelago and is located at 39º 05' and 39º 05'. It has a surface area of 61, 66 km2 with a maximum width of 8.5 km and 12,5km of length. Oval in shape and not very mountainous, its highest point reaches 398m in Pico Timão, in the centre of the island. |

| Graciosa is believed to have been found on May 2nd, 1450, and first settled by the Portuguese Vasco Gil Sodré, whose origin is Montemor-o-Velho, in the mainland. The island has about 4.700 inhabitants, most of which live on agriculture, fishery and services. |
| The windmills are an important landmark in the landscape of the island. There are about 20 on the whole island, four of which in S. Mateus. Our windmill was renovated and adapted to the needs of our times. The bathrooms and kitchen had to be built in the basis of the windmill, whose access is made through an interior passage. |
| The main village of the island is Santa Cruz, which is 6 km away from S. Mateus. This town hall has a large and beautiful square and the houses have an interesting architecture. |
| Thus, on the ground floor, there is a bedroom with a double bed and a private toilet with shower; there is another bathroom; a laundry equipped with washing machine and drier; a completely equipped kitchen and a dining-room with wide windows that enable a marvellous view to the small island of Praia and to the sea, which is just across the street. The windmill itself has three floors: On the first floor there are a living room and an open terrace. On the second floor there is a bedroom with a double bed. On the third floor, the cupola, there is a couch. This place invites you to read, rest or see the sights. |
| Our windmill is located in the eastern coast, in the picturesque village of S. Mateus. It faces the sea and the islet of Praia, “Ilhéu da Praia”. It distances about 300 metres from the only sand beach of Graciosa. S. Mateus, as well as the whole island, is an ideal place for swimming, fishing a (we can lend you the fishing rods), diving, walking, etc. |
